East Village residents are waking up to a nightmare scenario as thousands of adult migrants have turned their neighborhood into a giant toilet. The once bustling and vibrant community has become overrun with poop and urine as migrants litter the streets and park with their bodily waste and leave cups of urine on doorsteps. This deplorable situation is the result of Mayor Adams’ disastrous handling of the migrant crisis, which has left residents and volunteers scrambling to clean up the mess left behind by these newcomers.
Since November, the former St. Brigid’s School on East 7th street has been transformed into an intake center for migrants seeking shelter after their 30 and 60-day stays have expired. But the overflow onto neighboring Tompkins Square Park has caused a stench that has residents holding their noses. The city’s Parks Department was forced to remove three Port-a-potties from the park due to their extreme filth, leaving migrants with no other option but to use the park and surrounding areas as their personal bathroom. And if that wasn’t bad enough, one migrant was caught urinating on a tree in broad daylight, showing a blatant disregard for the community and its residents.
The situation has become so bad that Park workers have given up on maintaining the lavatories, which are now filled with spilled food and plastic containers. Locals and volunteers have reported finding cups filled with urine and even human-sized poop in tree beds, between parked cars, and on doorsteps. These migrants have no respect for the community they have invaded and are content with turning the once-beautiful park into their personal dumping ground.
NYC — Migrants who swarmed an East Village neighborhood destroyed the public toilets by clogging them up, causing the city to remove them. Now the migrants, who entered the US illegally through the southern border, are defecating in the park & streets. https://t.co/tYUpOjY5w5 pic.twitter.com/3lnj8Weg5D

According to a street cleaner, the problem is exacerbated by the fact that these migrants are being denied access to restrooms at the nearby intake center. This has forced many to resort to using plastic cups and leaving them on people’s doorsteps, creating an unsanitary and disgusting living environment for local residents. Not only are these migrants causing a public health hazard, but they are also leaving a massive burden on the already overwhelmed sanitation workers who now have to clean up after them.
Despite being aware of the dire situation, the Parks Department has done little to address the issue. The district manager for Community Board 3 has expressed frustration at the lack of action by Mayor Adams’ administration and called the situation a “humanitarian crisis.” Meanwhile, the mayor’s office has responded with a tone-deaf statement, claiming that there are available public restrooms a 7-minute walk away, and blaming migrants for lining up when they don’t have to and choosing to sleep outside.
It’s time for Mayor Adams to step up and take responsibility for his mishandling of the migrant crisis and provide a real solution that doesn’t involve turning local neighborhoods into giant toilets. East Village residents deserve better.
