The Perkiomen Valley School District in the Philadelphia area voted 5-4 to prohibit biological boys from using girls’ bathrooms, sparking heated debates and protests among parents and high school students. The decision comes after weeks of controversy, initiated when a father voiced concerns that his daughter was distressed over encountering a boy in the high school girls’ restroom. The father contended that it was a matter of biology, safety, and personal space.

The initial resistance to a similar policy on September 11, which would have required students to use bathrooms based on their biological sex, changed after approximately 400 high school students from Perkiomen High School staged a walkout, brandishing signs that read “Respect girls’ rights” and “Stay in your bathroom.” The walkout prompted one school board member to reconsider, ultimately tipping the vote in favor of the new policy.

The approved policy stipulates that students must use school bathrooms in accordance with their biological sex, but also seeks to address concerns by making more single-use restrooms available to students. The decision was met with strong opinions on both sides during a tense board meeting. A supporter of the new policy, claiming to identify as a woman for over a year, faced accusations of mocking trans-identifying individuals.

The controversy over transgender bathroom and locker room use has become a nationwide issue, with parents expressing worries about their children sharing these spaces with students of the opposite gender. One major point of contention is the lack of transparency regarding student gender transitions at school, leading some parents to accuse schools of keeping them uninformed about their children’s new gender identities. Lawsuits against school districts have emerged as a result of this secrecy.

Notably, more than 18,000 schools across the country have rules allowing or encouraging staff to conceal a student’s gender identity from parents, according to a compilation by Parents Defending Education. Some of the prominent districts on this list include Chicago Public Schools, Los Angeles Unified School District, D.C. Public Schools, Baltimore City Public Schools, San Francisco Unified School District, Portland Public Schools, and Seattle Public Schools.
