ABC is set to break new ground this fall with their latest Bachelor spinoff, “The Golden Bachelor,” aiming to prove that love knows no age. The network recently announced 71-year-old Gerry Turner as its first-ever star for this unique dating show.

Turner, a retired restaurateur, and father of two from Indiana, shared his perspective on love during an appearance on Good Morning America. After being married to his high school sweetheart, Toni, for 43 years, they enjoyed a fulfilling life together with their daughters Angie and Jenny, as well as their granddaughters Charlee and Payton. However, tragedy struck in 2017 when Toni passed away just six weeks after retiring.

Despite the heartbreak, Turner remains hopeful about finding love again. He believes that it is never too late to embark on a new romantic journey and encourages others to stay open to the possibilities. Inspired by his daughters, who suggested he join the show, Turner took the leap, recognizing that he had nothing to lose.

“She got robbed. Every day that goes by, that’s the thought that I have,” Turner told GMA. “I have her picture on a dresser in my closet. Every morning I give her a nod, ‘So what do you think about this?’ For awhile it was like, I was having a hard time figuring out if she would be okay. But we always told each other when one of us goes, we want the other to be happy. She’s up there rooting [for me]. She’s saying, ‘Yeah, Gary. Do this.’ ”

In describing his ideal partner, Turner expressed a preference for someone high-energy who enjoys activities such as playing pickleball and golf. He currently resides in his dream house by a beautiful lake in Indiana and relishes hosting barbecues, cheering for his favorite Chicago sports teams, and spending quality time with loved ones at local establishments.

While Turner is open to the idea of getting married again, he acknowledges that it is not a requirement for finding love on the show. His positive outlook and desire to make the most of his golden years exemplify the spirit of “The Golden Bachelor.”

ABC has been preparing for this series since 2020 when they initiated a casting call for individuals enjoying their “golden years” and seeking an exciting new dating show experience. The network has emphasized that “The Golden Bachelor” is intended for mature audiences, highlighting a different kind of love story that showcases the wisdom and life experiences of its participants.

As the franchise continues to evolve, with the current season of “The Bachelorette” airing and the upcoming premiere of the ninth season of “Bachelor in Paradise,” ABC’s foray into “The Golden Bachelor” promises a refreshing twist on the search for love. The show aims to provide a platform for hopeful individuals who have endured love, loss, and laughter to explore the potential of finding companionship and endless possibilities in their sunset years.
