Longtime South Carolina Congressman Joe Wilson, 77, collapsed at an event in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday and was rushed to the hospital after experiencing “stroke-like symptoms.” The incident occurred during an event at Ukraine House, and the news was later confirmed by his son, South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson.
Speaking to reporters ahead of a presidential debate watch party, Alan Wilson provided an update on his father’s condition. “I just spoke to my mom, who is currently at the hospital with my father. Doctors have confirmed to us that he has experienced stroke-like symptoms,” he said. He added that he had been able to speak with his father and was “incredibly thankful” that the congressman was stable and receiving care from medical professionals.
The congressman’s office also released a statement on his official X account, confirming that Wilson was being evaluated at a local hospital. “Congressman Joe Wilson, R-S.C., was taken ill and is being evaluated at a local hospital in Washington, D.C.,” the post read.
The news prompted an outpouring of support from fellow lawmakers. South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace urged prayers for Wilson and his family, posting on X, “Prayers up for Congressman Wilson and his family tonight. Have spoken to the family and I ask we all send a positive vibe and a prayer his way tonight and may he recover as fast as humanly possible.” Senator Tim Scott also expressed his concern, writing, “Praying for a full and speedy recovery for my friend.”

The South Carolina GOP echoed these sentiments, sharing on X: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Dean of the SC Delegation, Congressman Joe Wilson, for a quick and complete recovery.”
Wilson’s collapse comes just after a busy day on Capitol Hill, where he had participated in a House floor vote earlier that day. On Monday, he had been present at a press event related to a congressional report on the Biden-Harris administration’s Afghanistan withdrawal.
It remains unclear how Wilson’s condition will impact his duties in Congress. With the current composition of the House standing at 220 Republicans and 211 Democrats, his potential absence may affect legislative proceedings. However, details about his recovery timeline and whether he will be able to vote today have yet to be confirmed.
All eyes remain on Wilson’s health, as colleagues and constituents alike hope for his swift recovery.
