New York Attorney General Letitia James claimed during a recent public appearance that individuals have been sent to her home to surveil her, alleging that former President Donald Trump is behind the incidents. James made the remarks on May 3 during a speech at the National Action Network’s headquarters in Harlem, an event hosted by Rev. Al Sharpton. The statement comes as James faces an ongoing criminal investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice related to allegations of mortgage fraud.

According to James, individuals were outside her residence taking photos and sharing them online during a Sunday church service. “They got individuals coming to my house, standing outside my house,” she told the audience. “Last Sunday – church Sunday while I was in church – these individuals were in front of my house, taking pictures and then streaming it, putting it on social media.” James described the actions as part of what she called a “revenge tour,” referencing her successful civil case against Trump, which resulted in a $454 million judgment against the former president and his business interests earlier this year.

James did not specify which of her properties was allegedly targeted. However, her real estate holdings are currently under federal investigation. At issue are two properties: her long-time residence in Brooklyn and a home in northern Virginia that she purchased in 2023. Allegations have been raised that James listed the Virginia property as her “principal residence” while serving in elected office in New York. State law requires the attorney general to reside in New York during their term and to have maintained five years of prior residency before assuming the role.

In March 2025, Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) Director William Pulte sent a criminal referral to the Department of Justice. In the referral, Pulte alleged that James may have misrepresented the occupancy and details of her Brooklyn property on mortgage documents and building permit applications. Specifically, Pulte claimed James reported the property as a four-unit building, which may have qualified her for reduced mortgage rates and access to federal loan modification programs, including the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP).

On the heels of these allegations, the U.S. Department of Justice officially opened a criminal investigation into James’ property records and mortgage history earlier this week. According to multiple sources, federal investigators are now examining how James characterized the ownership and use of both the Virginia and Brooklyn properties. Some documents reportedly list James’s elderly father as the owner or co-owner of one of the properties, prompting additional inquiries.

To represent her in the ongoing investigation, James has hired attorney Abbe Lowell. Lowell is a prominent defense attorney who has represented high-profile clients such as Hunter Biden and Jared Kushner. Under recently enacted legislation in New York, state employees are permitted to access up to $10 million in legal defense funding if they are determined to be targets of federal investigations. It remains unclear whether James will use public funds for her legal expenses, but the possibility has prompted discussion in Albany and beyond.

The developments surrounding James come at a politically sensitive time, as she remains a prominent figure in New York politics and a vocal critic of Trump. Her recent public appearances, including the speech in Harlem, have included both campaign-style endorsements and statements addressing her legal circumstances. The investigation remains ongoing, and no charges have been filed as of this time.
