A spokesperson from the Minnesota Attorney General’s office has confirmed that former police officer Derek Chauvin is expected to survive following an attack in an Arizona prison on Friday. The Associated Press had earlier reported that Chauvin had been seriously injured after being stabbed in prison.

According to the statement, Attorney General Keith Ellison said he was saddened to hear about the attack on Chauvin and that all inmates should be able to serve their sentence without fear of violence. He also mentioned that Chauvin had been duly convicted of his crimes and should be allowed to serve his sentence peacefully.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons has also confirmed that an inmate was assaulted at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, Arizona. However, they did not provide any further details about the incident or the condition of the victim.

Chauvin, who was convicted for the murder of George Floyd, is currently serving a 21-year federal sentence for violating Floyd’s civil rights, as well as a concurrent 22-1/2 year sentence for murder in Minnesota state court. Floyd’s death had sparked worldwide protests against police brutality and racism after Chauvin, who is white, was filmed kneeling on Floyd’s neck for over nine minutes.

While the Bureau of Prisons has not released the identity of the victim, the Minnesota Attorney General’s office spokesperson, Brian Evans, stated that they have heard that Chauvin is expected to survive the attack. Due to privacy reasons, the Bureau of Prisons will not be providing any further updates on the victim’s condition.

The attack on Chauvin has raised concerns about the safety of inmates in prisons and the potential for retaliation or violence. However, no further details or updates have been provided at this time.
