Huge Great White Shark Washes Ashore

Well, here’s something you don’t see every day—a great white shark hitching a ride on the back of a tow truck.

Yes, you read that right. The Orleans Police Department in Massachusetts had quite the unusual assignment on Tuesday when they responded to a call about a washed-up great white shark. Instead of your typical fender-bender, they found themselves dealing with a 4,500-pound predator.

The department took to Facebook to share the bizarre experience, posting photos of the massive shark being hauled away like it was just another roadside casualty. One shot shows the shark upside down on the back of the tow truck, and another shows the creature being driven away, giving everyone a sense of just how big these beasts really are. No need for Sgt. Elliott to wrestle the thing, though—thankfully, it was already down for the count.

According to National Geographic, great whites can live over 70 years and grow up to 21 feet long, weighing as much as 2.5 tons. That’s a whole lot of fish, and towing one away is probably a bit more complicated than your typical car removal.

But hey, it’s just another day for the Orleans police, who quipped on Facebook, “You really never know what kind of call you’ll respond to on any given shift.” I’d say that’s an understatement.

As for what caused this massive shark’s demise? Well, the police aren’t saying. Maybe it was just the unfortunate result of the mysterious and sometimes brutal ocean ecosystem.

Whatever the case, the locals sure got a show—and a great reminder that you never quite know what you’re going to find on the beaches of Cape Cod.
