Violet, speaking at the board meeting, introduced herself by saying, “Hi, Violet Affleck, Los Angeles resident, first-time voter, I’m 18.” She continued, “I contracted a post-viral condition in 2019. I’m okay now, but I saw first-hand that medicine does not always have answers to the consequences of even minor viruses.” Her personal narrative underscored the seriousness of her concerns and the importance of preventive measures.
Violet’s demands were clear and comprehensive. She called for mask availability, improved air filtration, and the implementation of Far-UVC light in government facilities, including jails and detention centers. Furthermore, she urged the county to make high-quality tests and treatment widely available and free, and to staunchly oppose mask bans, stating, “They do not keep us safer.”
Her speech came at a time when debates about pandemic-era protections are resurfacing. Dr. Anthony Fauci recently acknowledged that some of the restrictions during the lockdown did not significantly slow the spread of COVID-19, and lawmakers are considering reinstating mask bans amidst rising tensions at protests.
