Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., found herself facing an unexpected eviction from her private Capitol office. The eviction order came from House Speaker pro-tempore Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., a close ally of ousted Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif.
The order, confirmed by Fox News Digital, instructed Pelosi to vacate her Capitol hideaway by Wednesday, with the space being reassigned for “speaker office use.” The email notifying Pelosi of the eviction stated, “Please vacate the space tomorrow, the room will be re-keyed.”
Pelosi reportedly moved out on Tuesday, aided by the staff of House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y. Capitol hideaways are considered a luxury and are typically granted to only a select few House members.
Responding to the eviction, Pelosi issued a statement expressing her disappointment in the move, calling it a “sharp departure from tradition.” She emphasized that as Speaker, she had granted former Speaker Dennis Hastert a significantly larger suite of offices for as long as he wished, highlighting the contrast in treatment.
The former Speaker, currently in California to mourn the loss of her friend Dianne Feinstein, pointed out the unusual timing of the eviction amid important decisions facing the new Republican leadership. Pelosi did not shy away from highlighting the significance of the moment, stating, “With all of the important decisions that the new Republican Leadership must address, which we are all eagerly awaiting, one of the first actions taken by the new Speaker Pro Tempore was to order me to immediately vacate my office in the Capitol.”
Pelosi concluded her statement, saying, “Now that the new Republican Leadership has settled this important matter, let’s hope they get back to work on what’s truly important for the American people.”

This development unfolded following McCarthy’s removal from his seat in a motion to vacate, where eight House Republicans, led by Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, joined House Democrats in voting to oust the former Speaker. Pelosi did not participate in the vote as she was in California attending Senator Feinstein’s burial.
