Hello everyone! If you’re a Rory McIlroy fan, Sunday at the BMW Championship was likely a bit of a heart-stopper. The four-time major winner experienced what can only be described as a rollercoaster of a round at Castle Pines Golf Club in Colorado. And let’s just say, it wasn’t the smoothest ride.
The drama began on the ninth hole, where McIlroy’s day took a bizarre turn. After hitting a wayward tee shot on the par four, his ball barely avoided a watery grave, coming to rest on a bank just above a creek.
But the real shock came when Rory leaned on his driver to pick up his tee—only for the club to snap in half beneath him. Talk about a freak accident! Unfortunately for McIlroy, PGA Tour rules didn’t allow him to replace the broken club, leaving him to play the remaining nine holes without his trusty driver.

This wasn’t the first time during the tournament that McIlroy’s frustrations boiled over. Just a couple of days earlier, on Friday, after a less-than-ideal tee shot on the 17th, the usually composed McIlroy let his emotions get the better of him. In a moment of pure frustration, he chucked his club into the water, much to the shock of the spectators. It’s not every day you see one of golf’s biggest stars take such a literal dive.

But back to Sunday—down a club and faced with a tricky approach shot after his tee shot landed precariously close to the creek, McIlroy had no choice but to get creative. In a scene that surely had fans holding their breath, he stripped off his shoes and socks, waded into the water, and somehow managed to balance on a rock to fire his next shot onto the green. Miraculously, he saved par on the hole, though he made the turn at one-over and well behind the leaders.

It’s been a tough summer for McIlroy. He came agonizingly close to winning his fifth major at the US Open, only to finish second behind Bryson DeChambeau after missing crucial putts down the stretch. Then, he missed the cut at The Open and narrowly missed out on a medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, finishing fifth.
Sunday’s round at the BMW Championship was just another chapter in what’s been a challenging season for McIlroy. But if there’s one thing we know about Rory, it’s that he’s resilient. Despite the setbacks, he continues to fight—and that’s exactly why his fans keep rooting for him, even on the roughest of days.
