Here we go again with the NFL (No Fun League), living up to its nickname and then some.
This time, it’s Kansas City Chiefs superstar Patrick Mahomes who’s been slapped with a ridiculous fine for—brace yourself—making a gun motion with his arms during a touchdown celebration. Yes, the league has decided that miming a finger gun is now considered a “violent gesture” worthy of a $14,000 fine. You can’t make this stuff up.

Let’s be real: Mahomes is one of the NFL’s golden boys, the kind of player who brings excitement, sells jerseys, and keeps fans glued to their TVs. But even he isn’t immune to the NFL’s crusade against anything that might remotely resemble a firearm. And he’s not alone. Over the 2024 season, players across the league have been hit with fines and penalties for similar celebrations. The message is clear—if your touchdown antics include even a hint of gun imagery, prepare to fork over some cash.
Case in point: Sunday’s game between the Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears saw yet another gun-related celebration. You can practically set your watch to the NFL’s impending fine announcements. What’s next, a crackdown on finger-pointing? A ban on pretending to shoot an arrow because it might offend someone? The league’s hypersensitivity has officially reached parody levels.
Here’s the irony: the NFL is fine with plenty of over-the-top celebrations that border on absurd. Remember the “Trump dance”? The league rolled with it. Yet they can’t seem to grasp the fact that Americans love guns. The Second Amendment isn’t just a right; it’s a cultural cornerstone, something many fans hold dear. This relentless policing of harmless gestures only alienates a huge swath of the NFL’s audience.
Of course, the league will claim this is about maintaining a “family-friendly” image or curbing violent symbolism. But let’s not pretend that finger guns are the hill to die on here. Fans aren’t throwing popcorn at their TVs over Mahomes miming a pistol; they’re outraged by the constant nitpicking that sucks the fun out of the game.

If anything, these fines highlight how out of touch the NFL has become with its fanbase. Football is supposed to be gritty, exciting, and unapologetically American—not sanitized to the point where players are afraid to celebrate a hard-fought touchdown. Maybe the league should focus less on policing celebrations and more on, oh, I don’t know, fixing their officiating? Until then, the No Fun League lives on, much to the dismay of its increasingly frustrated fans.
