Authorities continue to investigate a series of violent incidents linked to an alleged extremist group after new details emerged connecting a suspect in the killing of a U.S. Border Patrol agent to the unresolved murder of their parents in Pennsylvania.

On January 3, 2023, police conducting a wellness check discovered the bodies of Richard and Rita Zajko, aged 72 and 69, at their home in Chester Heights Borough, Pennsylvania. The Delaware County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled their deaths homicides, estimating that the killings took place on December 31, 2022. The Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) confirmed that the case remains an active investigation.

More than a year later, investigators say they have found a possible link between the Zajkos’ murder and the fatal shooting of Border Patrol Agent David Christopher Maland in January 2025. Authorities confirmed that a firearm recovered from the crime scene in Vermont was connected to a person of interest in the Pennsylvania homicides.

According to police reports, Maland, 44, was shot and killed on January 20, 2025, during a routine traffic stop in Coventry, Vermont, about 20 miles south of the Canadian border. The individuals inside the vehicle, identified as Teresa Youngblut and Felix “Ophelia” Bauckholt, allegedly opened fire on the agent. Bauckholt was killed in the exchange, while Youngblut was taken into custody and charged with weapons violations.

Authorities say that firearms recovered from Youngblut and Bauckholt’s vehicle were traced back to Michelle Zajko, the daughter of Richard and Rita Zajko. Police have not confirmed whether Zajko is directly suspected in the Pennsylvania homicides, but they remain a person of interest in both cases.

Law enforcement officials have identified Youngblut, Bauckholt, and Zajko as alleged members of a group known as the “Zizians.” Reports indicate that the group has been connected to at least six homicides, though the exact nature of its ideology remains unclear. Online writings from suspected members reference topics ranging from radical veganism and transgender identity to artificial intelligence.

Police have also arrested 34-year-old Jack Lasota, whom sources describe as a leader within the group. Lasota and Zajko were taken into custody in Maryland and now face multiple charges, including trespassing, obstruction, and possession of a handgun in a vehicle.

Attorney Daniel McGarrigle, representing Lasota, released a statement emphasizing that his client is “presumed innocent unless and until the government meets its burden of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.”

The Pennsylvania State Police and federal agencies continue to investigate the connection between the Zajko homicides and Maland’s killing, with further legal proceedings expected in the coming months.
