President Joe Biden addressed the 2021 graduating class of Howard University in Washington D.C. on Saturday, claiming that white supremacy is the greatest threat to America’s future and that the graduates of the historically black college and university (HBCU) will help determine the nation’s future.

In his speech, Biden noted that America’s fight against racism is “a battle that’s never really over” and encouraged the graduates to be on guard for white supremacy, which he identified as “the most dangerous terrorist threat to our homeland.” He also took a veiled shot at his predecessor, former President Donald Trump, for not doing enough to help African Americans.

“The harsh reality of racism has long torn us apart,” Biden said at the historically Black university in Washington, D.C., Saturday.  “It’s a battle. It’s never really over, but on the best days, enough of us have the guts and the hearts to stand up for the best in us, to choose love over hate.

“Union over disunion. Progress over retreat. To stand up against the poison of White supremacy like I did in my inaugural address to single it out as the most dangerous terrorist threat to our homeland.”

At the same time, Biden sought to encourage the graduates by telling them that they represent the future of America, a future that showcases the “strength of our diversity at the center of American life.” His remarks were met with both applause and protest from the crowd, with some students holding signs that read “A Black child was lynched yesterday!” in reference to the recent death of Jordan Neely on a New York City subway.

Despite the protests, Biden concluded his speech by telling the Howard grads that they represent “the best” of America and that they will help determine the nation’s future. He also urged them to fight against racism and white supremacy, which he believes are the greatest threats to the nation’s future.
