One person is dead and 11 others were wounded after a gunman opened fire in a popular tourist area of Myrtle Beach on Saturday night, according to law enforcement officials.

The Myrtle Beach Police Department reported that the incident occurred just before midnight in the heart of the city’s entertainment district. Officers on patrol observed a disturbance involving multiple individuals and responded to the situation.

According to an update posted by the department on its Facebook page, during the altercation, one individual opened fire. In response to the immediate threat, an officer discharged their firearm. The individual shot by the officer later died from his injuries.

Horry County Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard confirmed the identity of the deceased as 18-year-old Jerrius Davis of Bennettsville, South Carolina. Officials stated that the officer involved in the shooting was not injured.

The Myrtle Beach Police Department indicated that 11 individuals sustained injuries as a result of the gunfire and are receiving medical treatment. No additional details regarding their conditions have been released at this time.

Myrtle Beach Mayor Brenda Bethune addressed the incident, emphasizing the quick action taken by the officer. She told local outlet News13 that the officer’s prompt response prevented further injuries.

“Our officer saw what happened, and when he saw that an altercation was taking place and a gun was being shot, the officer responded very quickly and, in my opinion, saved lives,” Bethune said.

Mayor Bethune also commented on the broader safety of the area, noting that she had been on Ocean Boulevard about an hour before the shooting occurred and had felt safe at that time. She described the shooting as an isolated incident and expressed confidence in the overall security of Myrtle Beach.

“This was an isolated incident. We had a huge crowd on the boulevard late last night, and we can’t always control what people are going to do, but we also can’t just shut ourselves in and do nothing,” Bethune said.

Representative Nancy Mace, R-S.C., issued a statement regarding the event. She expressed condolences for the victims and praised first responders for their efforts.

“Devastated by the tragic shooting in Myrtle Beach. Our hearts are torn apart for the victims and their families,” Mace wrote in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. “South Carolina stands strong, and we will not tolerate violence of any sort in our communities. God bless the first responders on the scene,” she added.

The Myrtle Beach Police Department extended its sympathies to those impacted by the shooting, stating, “Our hearts and continued prayers are with all those affected, as well as their loved ones during this difficult time.”

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The police department encouraged anyone with information or video footage related to the incident to contact either the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) or the Myrtle Beach Police Department.
