R&B artist Ne-Yo released a candid video statement on Monday, addressing the controversy surrounding his recent comments about gender identity and parenting. The 43-year-old rapper, known for hits like “So Sick” and “Miss Independent,” initially posted a written apology on his Twitter account, but his video statement appeared to retract certain aspects of that apology stating that his publicist wrote the statement.

However, in a newly posted video, Ne-Yo began by asserting his prerogative to express his opinions, emphasizing that his intention was never to offend anyone. He acknowledged that his words might have caused offense and apologized for that, clarifying that his apology was not for his opinion but for any hurt feelings his words may have caused.
The father of seven children, including five boys and two girls, Ne-Yo passionately stated that he was entitled to his beliefs just as anyone else was entitled to theirs. He made it clear that he has no animosity towards the LGBTQIA+ community and respects individuals’ rights to make choices for themselves and their families.
Addressing the specific topic that sparked the controversy, Ne-Yo expressed his belief that he would never be comfortable with allowing a child to make a decision he views as potentially detrimental to their future. He emphasized his commitment to his role as a father and his desire to protect his children, even if his stance draws criticism.
While acknowledging the possibility of being “canceled” for his views, Ne-Yo remained resolute, asserting his willingness to adapt and find new paths if necessary. He acknowledged that his career might face consequences, but he remained committed to his role as a parent and provider for his children.
Ne-Yo concluded by expressing his intention to further educate himself on the matter while maintaining that no argument or perspective could sway his fundamental stance on allowing children to make such significant decisions.
