The Trump administration has directed senior FBI officials to resign or face termination, according to a report from Fox News. While the total number of affected employees has not been disclosed, sources indicate that the directive primarily targets high-ranking officials who were promoted under former FBI Director Christopher A. Wray.

The move comes as Kash Patel, President Donald Trump’s nominee to lead the FBI, seeks Senate confirmation. Patel has publicly stated that, if confirmed, he does not intend to focus on past controversies or engage in retribution against officials associated with previous investigations.

“I have no interest, no desire, and will not, if confirmed, go backwards. There will be no politicization at the FBI. There will be no retributive actions taken,” Patel said during his confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Despite Patel’s assurances, an email obtained by The New York Times suggests that at least one senior FBI official has already been notified of his impending dismissal. The official reportedly wrote to colleagues that he was informed he would be removed “from the rolls of the F.B.I.” as soon as Monday morning.

“I was given no rationale for this decision, which, as you might imagine, has come as a shock,” the agent wrote in the email.

The reported dismissals have drawn scrutiny from some lawmakers, including Democratic Senator Cory Booker, who questioned Patel about whether the Trump administration was seeking to retaliate against FBI personnel involved in past investigations.

“Are you aware of any plans or discussions to punish in any way, including termination, FBI agents or personnel associated with Trump investigations?” Booker asked during the hearing.

“I am not aware of that, senator,” Patel responded.

The timing of the reported resignations and terminations has raised concerns among FBI officials, as Patel has not yet been confirmed to lead the bureau. Until the confirmation process is complete, Brian Driscoll continues to serve as the FBI’s acting director.

When contacted for comment, the FBI declined to respond. The administration has also not provided further details regarding the decision or the specific officials who may be affected.

The situation marks a significant shift for the FBI, an agency that has faced intense political scrutiny in recent years. While some see the personnel changes as an effort to restructure leadership, others have raised concerns about potential political influence. As the confirmation process for Patel continues, the agency remains in a period of uncertainty.
