Sheryl Swoopes, WNBA Hall of Famer and current Dallas Wings broadcaster, found herself in hot water this week after a fan accused her of being “unfair” to rising star Caitlin Clark. Swoopes, not one to back down, responded on X (formerly Twitter) by posting screenshots of what she claims are text messages exchanged with Clark.

The texts, dated February 5, show Swoopes apologizing to Clark for an earlier mistake during her appearance on the “Gil’s Arena” podcast with former NBA star Gilbert Arenas. In that episode, Swoopes incorrectly stated that Clark had played five seasons of college basketball and averaged over 40 shots per game. In reality, Clark played four seasons, averaging 22.7 shots per game, and still managed to become the all-time leading scorer in NCAA basketball history.

Swoopes’ apology was simple and respectful, acknowledging her error and expressing admiration for Clark’s game. Clark, in return, thanked Swoopes for her kind words and contributions to the WNBA, to which Swoopes responded with more appreciation.

Despite this exchange, Swoopes has faced ongoing criticism for her comments about Clark, leading to her being removed from her regular post as the Dallas Wings color commentator for Sunday’s game against Clark’s Indiana Fever. This removal followed several instances where Swoopes’ remarks about Clark stirred controversy. For example, she praised Chicago Sky player Diamond DeShields after a flagrant foul on Clark—a foul that was just the latest in a series of aggressive plays against the rookie phenom.

Swoopes has defended herself fiercely on social media, firing back at her critics and even responding to ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, who called her out for downplaying Clark’s contributions to the Fever in a recent episode of her podcast, “Queens of the Court.” Smith didn’t mince words, saying Swoopes was “insane” for not acknowledging Clark’s impact. Swoopes, in turn, reminded Smith that she has the right to talk about whoever she wants on her own platform, just as he does.

Meanwhile, Clark continues to silence her critics with her performance on the court. During Swoopes’ absence from the broadcast booth on Sunday, Clark put on a show, scoring 28 points and dishing out 12 assists, leading the Fever to their fourth straight win. Clark’s rookie season has been nothing short of historic, as she’s shattered records game after game, including surpassing WNBA legend Tamika Catchings for the most points scored by a rookie in Fever history.

Clark’s accomplishments speak for themselves. From setting the rookie record for most made 3-pointers to becoming the first WNBA player with at least 15 points, five rebounds, and five assists in six consecutive games, she’s proven to be one of the league’s brightest stars. Despite the drama surrounding her, Clark remains focused on her game, continuing to break barriers and set new standards in the WNBA.

As for Swoopes, the controversy serves as a reminder that even legends can find themselves in hot water when their opinions clash with the public’s perception of rising stars. Whether this situation will affect her future in broadcasting remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Caitlin Clark is a force to be reckoned with, both on and off the court.
