A man was shot by the Secret Service during an armed confrontation near the White House early Sunday morning, according to a statement released by the agency. The incident occurred shortly after midnight, about a block away from the White House near the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.
Hours before the confrontation, law enforcement agencies received a report of a “suicidal individual” who was possibly traveling to Washington, D.C., from Indiana. Secret Service agents later located the suspect’s vehicle and identified a person on foot matching the description.
“As officers approached, the individual brandished a firearm, and an armed confrontation ensued, during which shots were fired by our personnel,” the Secret Service said in a statement shared by agency spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.
The suspect was taken to a local hospital after sustaining gunshot wounds. As of now, there is no official update on the individual’s condition. No Secret Service personnel or bystanders were reported injured during the incident.
The Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia will take the lead in the investigation, as it is the primary agency responsible for reviewing use-of-force incidents in Washington, D.C. The Secret Service stated that they would fully cooperate with the investigation.
At the time of the shooting, President Trump was not at the White House. According to his official schedule, he was at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida. The president is expected to return to the White House later in the evening.
