Well, here we go again—President Donald Trump is rolling out another bold America-first policy, and naturally, the left is already clutching its pearls. This time, the target is China, and the weapon of choice is a 10% tariff on imports starting February 1. The reasoning? China’s undeniable role in fueling the fentanyl crisis by supplying precursor chemicals that end up devastating communities across America. Trump, in his signature style, laid it out plain and simple: if China wants to continue enabling this scourge, there will be a price to pay. And judging by their initial reaction, it looks like Beijing isn’t exactly thrilled.
First, let’s talk about the rationale here because it’s one the mainstream media will predictably gloss over. Fentanyl has become the leading cause of death for Americans aged 18 to 49. Let that sink in. This isn’t just a “public health issue”; it’s a full-blown national crisis. China sends the chemicals, Mexican cartels mix and distribute the product, and Americans pay the price—in lives and billions of taxpayer dollars spent on law enforcement, healthcare, and lost productivity. Yet somehow, the same crowd that demands more government spending to “combat the opioid epidemic” has a problem with Trump addressing the root cause. Curious, isn’t it?
Critics, of course, are already trotting out the usual talking points. “Tariffs will raise prices for American consumers!” they shout, as though inflation wasn’t already a problem under the Biden administration’s reckless spending spree. Here’s a thought: maybe it’s worth paying a little more for your cheap electronics if it means cutting off the flow of deadly fentanyl that’s killing your neighbors. Trump’s Treasury Secretary nominee, Scott Bessent, hit the nail on the head when he said tariffs would also make it harder for adversaries like China to “export their way out of their current economic malaise.” Translation: the days of America being the world’s punching bag are over.

Naturally, the Democrats are having a meltdown. Rep. Suzan DelBene (D-Wash.) claims the tariffs will hurt “workers, farmers, and businesses,” conveniently ignoring that those same groups have been suffering under decades of disastrous trade policies that shipped jobs overseas and gutted American manufacturing. Trump’s proposed “External Revenue Service,” designed to collect tariffs and other foreign trade-related revenue, is another trigger point for the left. They’re acting like it’s some new government boogeyman, but in reality, it’s a straightforward way to ensure that foreign adversaries stop taking advantage of our economy. You’d think the party that loves taxes would at least appreciate the idea of taxing China for a change.
And let’s not overlook the absolute hypocrisy from Beijing. Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning had the nerve to say, “We always believe that there is no winner in a trade war.” Oh, please. China’s been waging an economic war against the U.S. for decades—stealing intellectual property, manipulating their currency, flooding our markets with cheap goods, and, yes, enabling the fentanyl epidemic. Now that someone’s finally standing up to them, they want to talk about cooperation? Spare us the sanctimony.
Trump’s not stopping at China, either. He’s also got Mexico and Canada in his sights with a 25% tariff until both countries get serious about stopping the flow of drugs and illegal immigrants into the United States. Predictably, this has the globalists and open-border advocates in a tizzy, but it’s exactly the kind of hardline approach that voters wanted when they sent Trump back to the White House. Enough is enough. America can’t afford to sit idly by while its sovereignty and security are trampled under the guise of “free trade.”
The truth is, Trump’s tariffs are part of a larger strategy to restore fairness, bolster American manufacturing, and protect our national interests. The newly signed “America First Trade Policy” executive order signals a shift back to common sense—investigating the economic and security risks of our trade deficits and implementing solutions that actually benefit Americans. It’s a far cry from the Biden-era policies that prioritized globalist ideals over the well-being of everyday citizens.

At the end of the day, the choice is simple: you can either back policies that prioritize the safety and prosperity of the American people, or you can wring your hands about the price of imported plastic junk. Trump’s making the right call here, and no amount of whining from Democrats, the media, or China itself is going to change that. Buckle up—it’s America First, and it’s about time.
Trump’s tariffs on China will not hurt the American middle class – This is what trade expert Nazak Nikakhtar has been insisting for years. She explains why.
