A 10-year-old boy is in recovery after suffering serious injuries during a plane crash in Northeast Philadelphia on Friday evening. His parents say he is making progress and fighting hard following emergency surgery.

Lashawn Hamiel, the mother of Andre Howard, spoke to local media, describing the difficulty of seeing her child injured but emphasizing his resilience. “But he’s good. He’s pushing through,” she told 6 ABC on Saturday. Andre was reportedly among the first patients transported to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital following the incident.

According to his family, Andre was in a car with his father and siblings near Roosevelt Mall when they witnessed the crash. His father, also named Andre Howard, recounted the terrifying moments as debris rained down from the sky.

“My son who’s named after me, Andre Howard, tells his little sister, ‘Get down.’ And he grabs her. I hear the glass shatter. I turn around, there’s a piece of metal sticking out of my son’s head from the plane,” he recalled.

An unidentified man at the scene saw the child’s injuries and used his shirt to apply pressure to his head while waiting for emergency responders. Andre was rushed into emergency surgery, and his father stated that doctors initially did not expect him to survive.

The crash, which resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries to individuals on the ground, involved a Jet Rescue Air Ambulance aircraft. The Breitbart News reported that the aircraft, a Mexican-registered Learjet 55 with tail number XA-UCI, had taken off from Northeast Philadelphia Airport shortly after 6 p.m. Approximately one minute later, it fell from an altitude of about 1,600 feet and crashed at the intersection of Cottman Avenue and Bustleton Avenue, near Roosevelt Mall.

According to the Associated Press, the aircraft was transporting a child receiving medical treatment in Philadelphia back to her home in Mexico. The flight was scheduled to stop in Branson, Missouri, before continuing to Tijuana. Onboard the plane was the young patient’s mother and a crew of four.

Authorities reported that at least seven people were killed in the crash, 6 ABC stated. The exact cause of the accident remains under investigation.

President Donald Trump addressed the tragic event on Friday evening, expressing condolences in a statement on social media. “So sad to see the plane go down in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. More innocent souls were lost. Our people are totally engaged. First Responders are already being given credit for doing a great job. More to follow. God Bless you all,” he wrote.

Andre was later transferred to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where he is said to be recovering. His father expressed pride in his son’s bravery, especially in how he acted in the critical moments before the crash.

“To face death yesterday and speaking today, stepping up for his little sister, like I train him and his other little brothers to do off of instinct. He’s my hero,” Howard said.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing, with officials working to determine the factors that led to the aircraft’s rapid descent and impact in a heavily populated area.
