After more than two decades of intrigue, courtroom battles, and international disputes, the 840-pound Bahia Emerald is finally heading home to Brazil.
This massive gem, mined in Bahia in 2001, has been the centerpiece of a legal saga as convoluted as any Hollywood thriller. With claims of theft, smuggling, and ownership disputes, the emerald’s story earned it the reputation of being “cursed.” Now, a U.S. District Court has ruled to end the drama.
Tales have been told for years about the 836-pound emerald believed to be worth up to $1 billion. The mystery of who rightfully owns it could be coming to an end, after a court ruling last week set in motion the gem’s repatriation to Brazil. https://t.co/uZHyDiN9ah

The saga began in 2001 when the emerald was stolen and smuggled out of Brazil. Since then, it’s bounced between claimants, courthouses, and custody battles, even landing in the hands of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office for safekeeping.
Over the years, the Brazilian government has consistently pushed for the gem’s return, citing its illegal export and rightful place in Brazil. On Thursday, U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton finally ruled in Brazil’s favor, citing insufficient evidence to block the emerald’s repatriation.
The ruling came after the Department of Justice (DOJ), acting on behalf of Brazil, filed motions under the mutual legal assistance treaty (MLAT) between the two countries. Mayer Brown, the law firm assisting Brazil, called the decision a “victory” for the nation and detailed their legal efforts to bring the emerald back. With this decision, the Bahia Emerald is set to be returned, marking the end of its long and controversial journey in U.S. custody.
An 836-pound “cursed” emerald worth nearly $1 billion will be returned to Brazil after 15 years under lock and key in Los Angeles.
