CNN anchor Jim Acosta is reportedly leaving the network after nearly two decades, following a reshuffling of CNN’s programming schedule that removed his 10 a.m. ET show.
According to the Status newsletter, Acosta’s departure comes after CNN announced last week that his weekday program would be replaced by The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer and Pamela Brown. The newsletter also reported that Acosta had been offered a two-hour slot beginning at midnight ET, but this less prominent role appears to have prompted his decision to leave the network.
CNN insiders have shared mixed reactions to Acosta’s exit. One insider told Fox News Digital that Acosta “struggled with the choice” and suggested his departure may result in an early termination of his contract. Another insider expressed disappointment, saying, “Many viewers like Jim… if there is anyone who could make the overnight go, it’s him,” adding, “It’s sad to see him go.”

Acosta first joined CNN in 2007, covering political campaigns and later serving as chief White House correspondent during both the Obama and Trump administrations. He rose to prominence for his often adversarial exchanges with former President Donald Trump and members of his administration. These confrontations, including a high-profile clash during a 2018 press conference where Acosta refused to relinquish the microphone, garnered widespread media attention.
After the incident, the Trump administration attempted to revoke Acosta’s press pass, citing inappropriate behavior. CNN sued the White House, arguing the move violated the First and Fifth Amendments. Acosta’s credentials were ultimately restored, and the case highlighted his contentious relationship with the Trump administration.

During Trump’s presidency, Acosta’s combative approach to questioning and his frequent public criticisms of the administration made him a polarizing figure. While his approach was praised by some as holding power to account, others accused him of grandstanding and seeking personal attention. Acosta’s profile grew significantly during this time, leading to a book deal and appearances on late-night talk shows.

In 2021, after President Joe Biden took office, Acosta transitioned to chief domestic correspondent and anchored a weekend show before eventually moving to a weekday slot. However, CNN’s leadership under CEO Mark Thompson appears to be charting a different path, aiming to position the network’s programming as more neutral as it enters another Trump presidential campaign cycle.
Acosta’s departure marks a significant shift for CNN, as the network continues to recalibrate its identity and lineup. It remains unclear what Acosta’s next career move will be. As one of CNN’s most recognizable and polarizing figures, his exit represents a notable change for the network, which is undergoing broader efforts to reshape its programming amid declining ratings and increased competition in the cable news landscape.
