Let’s talk about a story that’s causing quite a stir among Costco shoppers.

An Arizona woman, Ashton Weinberger, experienced a financial nightmare after what should have been a routine grocery trip to Costco. Instead of owing $308 for her purchases, she found herself with a whopping $5,241 bill due to duplicate charges on her Citi credit card.

Ashton Weinberger, a resident of Arcadia, shopped at a Costco in Phoenix last month. Shortly after her shopping trip, she began receiving notifications from Citi about repeated charges being made to her card. “At first, I was thinking, ‘Oh, that’s weird. It’s delayed.’ But then it hit again and again and again,” Weinberger recounted to AZFamily.

Concerned about the 17 extra charges, Weinberger reached out to Costco. Unfortunately, the response from the employees was less than reassuring—they had “no idea” what had happened. This incident occurred at one of the 20 Costco locations in Arizona.

For Ashton and her husband, the timing couldn’t be worse. They are in the middle of a home renovation and budgeting tightly. “When you’re doing a renovation, you are very tightly budgeting,” Ashton explained. “You need all the finances that you have available, so to suddenly not have $5,000 – It’s critical to getting the project done.”

Despite her immediate complaints to Costco, the charges remained unresolved. “I showed them all the charges. And they said, well, we’ll look into it, and then days went by,” Weinberger told AZFamily. Frustrated and desperate, she turned to the media for help. After contacting AZFamily, the news station reached out to Costco. The company responded that it is working with Ashton to resolve the situation.

Interestingly, Ashton Weinberger isn’t alone in her ordeal. Numerous users on X (formerly known as Twitter) have reported similar issues with duplicate charges at Costco between 2023 and 2024. One user tweeted about being double-charged and the subsequent dismissive response from Costco, while another mentioned being charged for eight cartons of milk when they only purchased four.

In other Costco news, the retail giant has recently ventured into the health sector by offering prescriptions for weight loss drugs, including Ozempic. Partnering with Sesame, Costco is launching a weight-loss program that provides access to approved GLP-1 prescription drugs.

Members can sign up for $179 for three months, while non-members can join for $195 a month. According to David Goldhill, Sesame’s co-founder and CEO, this program represents a significant innovation in medically supervised weight loss, aiming to make high-quality specialty care more accessible.

So, if you’re a Costco shopper, keep an eye on your receipts and bank statements. And if you’re looking for weight loss support, Costco might have a new solution for you.
