Last week, 14 busloads of illegal immigrants arrived in New York City from Texas, setting a record for the highest number of arrivals in a single night since the spring of 2022. In a virtual news conference, Adams announced the issuance of an executive order that requires charter bus companies to provide advanced notice of the arrival of any busload of illegal immigrants or face significant fines and even jail time.

The executive order states that charter bus companies must give a 32-hour notice ahead of time and are only allowed to drop off illegal immigrants between 8:30 am and noon, Monday through Friday. This will enable city officials to better prepare for their arrival and ensure that the process is organized and coordinated. Adams emphasized that this order is not meant to stop people from coming but is about maintaining order and protecting the rights of both the migrants and the city’s residents.

Those who violate the order will face class B misdemeanor charges, which carry a three-month jail sentence a $500 fine for individuals, and a $2,000 fine for corporations. The consequences for the bus companies do not end there, as their buses may also be seized by the police.

Mayor Adams also expressed his concerns about the actions of Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who has been actively encouraging the drop-off of migrants in states such as New York and Chicago. In response to this, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Denver Mayor Mike Johnston joined Adams in issuing similar restrictions and penalties for bus companies in their cities. However, it is important to note that these actions are not meant to stop the influx of migrants, but rather to ensure that they are arriving at their destinations in a safe and coordinated manner.

In addition to the advanced notice of arrival, bus drivers must also provide a manifest detailing the number of illegal immigrants on board, their recent arrival in the US, and whether they are single adults or traveling in family units. This information will help the city officials to assess the needs of the migrants and provide appropriate assistance.

Unfortunately, the situation has come to this, as the federal government has largely failed in its responsibility to address the ongoing border crisis.
