The internet is abuzz with the news that the New York Times named Senator John Fetterman to its list of most stylish people of 2022. That’s right, folks, Pennsylvania’s favorite dapping dude in shorts was praised for his aggressively basic attire.

It wasn’t enough to be shocked that Fetterman won the PA race for senate, but that he was awarded the title of best dressed for his sweatshirts and baggy shorts no matter the weather.  However, people are scratching their heads as to what reality we’re living in and are mocking Fetterman for being a “dude in shorts.”

Fetterman’s signature look consists of a classic sweatshirt paired with baggy shorts.  It’s an outfit that could easily be seen on any college campus.  Of course, there are times when Fetterman goes more formal—like when he wears baggy jeans instead of shorts or opts for boots instead of sneakers. But even these “dressier” looks still maintain their laidback vibe.

But does this make him stylish? Well, it depends on who you ask. For some people, the idea of wearing shorts for such a position and especially when giving speeches is simply too casual for them to consider it fashionable. On the other hand, others appreciate Fetterman’s willingness to break from traditional fashion norms and embrace a more relaxed style. After all, fashion isn’t just about what clothes you wear—it’s also about how you wear them.

I suppose at the end of the day, fashion is subjective—and so is being “stylish.” What one person considers stylish may not be considered so by another person. So whether you think that Senator-elect John Fetterman deserves his place on the NYT list or not doesn’t really matter; after all, no one can really decide who is or isn’t stylish except for themselves!

Many have mocked the senator while others praise him for his relatability.

One Twitter user posted, “Fetterman dresses like blue-collar Pennsylvanians. Which is what makes him relatable to other Pennsylvanians. Walk into the Harley-Davidson factory or any factory – and he fits in. Clothing is not a reflection of heart, character, or ethics.”

Another said, “this guy is a 1000% disgrace, the people in Pennsylvania should be ashamed of themselves.”
